5 Key Pieces: Sightseeing Edition

Sightseeing is one of my favorite things to do while traveling from city to city.  I love to be comfortable but looking chic is an absolute must.  I'm not trying to look like a soccer mom in my photos.  I know tennis shoes and gym shoes are comfy but they look sloppy.  Here is a list of my 5 essentials for sightseeing (as it is Fall in Washington D.C right now, these will be cold weather options)

1.  COMFY BLACK PANTS: Comfy black pants are the best of both worlds for all the walking you do while sightseeing.  They are stretchy and comfortable but still look polished and special.  They are a great base to build an ensemble around.  My favorites are from Bebe Sport.  They are stretchy enough to workout in but polished enough to go to a cafe or bar.

Another great option are the City Beat Pant by Lulu Lemon.  These pants are sleek and stretchy, have a special ruched panel, and are perfect for tucking into tall boots.

2.  CAMI (LAYERS PEOPLE)
It is essential that you layer when sightseeing.  Taking photographs of the Washington Monument while the wind is whipping off that reflecting pool will make you sorry if you didn't properly layer.  I like to pair a flowy cami or tank underneath a light thermal or cardi.  You can mix and match prints and colors and the layering looks ultra chic.

Fave Camis:

Anomalous Top (Anthroplogie)

Knit Racerback Tank (Forever 21)

3.  CARDI, THERMAL, OR SWEATER:
These look great layered over a special cami.  You can mix and match to your heart's content.  Some sweater must-haves: something soft, luxurious, and easily thrown around your shoulders, or folded and stashed in your tote if you get too toasty.  Here are a few faves:

4.  LEATHER JACKET:
The perfect outerwear.  It looks supple, polished, and super chic when you are traipsing around a city snapping photos.  I wear my leather jacket everywhere and over just about anything from summer dresses to long camis.  Tip:  You should try to purchase a REAL leather jacket (sorry vegan friends) it lasts longer and gets better with age and wear.  There ARE some great faux leather jackets out there but that we will save for a whole other post.  Vegan friendly fashion!  What do you think?

Here are some great leathers (From Top to Bottom)

Gap Paneled Leather Jacket (OBSESSED with the high collar)

Hinge Vintage Leather Jacket (Umm corset inspired.  HOT)

5.  BOOTS!
I adore boots, especially this time of year!  The key is finding a pair that will eventually mold to your leg and has great support.  They need to be sturdy and neutral -  and it doesn't hurt to find some with hot hardware, either!

Here are some of my favorites (Top to bottom)

Aerosoles Baking Sota Boot (I just bought these and I am OBSESSED.  I practically sleep in them)

Steve Madden Intyce Boots (I went through TWO pairs of these last fall/winter I wore them so much)

Target Mossimo Supply Katherine Genuine Leather Engineer Boots (Super tough, super sexy, super affordable)

EXTRA TIPS:

1.  Bring a scarf (you know my thoughts on scarves.  Obsessed) The one featured is from J.Crew.

2.  A cross body bag is essential.  You are hands free AND look chic - I like a neutral leather messenger bag. (I realize the one I featured is astronomically expensive but I had to.  It's Gucci.  Get into it.)

3.  It's a good idea to bring an emergency touch up kit for all those photos you will be posing in!  I don't want people to look at my fabulous pictures and say "who is that zombie standing outside the white house?  Oh never-mind, it's just Rachel."  BARF.  Benefit makes an AMAZING little emergency kit for these occasions called "Finding Mr. Bright"

4. Your camera.  Duh.  If you use an iphone like me - the HIPSTAMATIC app makes your photos look extra special and vintage.

Happy sightseeing!!
